Boat owner reports his own cousin for trespassing because he hosts a secret boat party with strangers behind his back: 'If something happens I'm the one on the hook'

In a loving family, trust goes both ways.

This boat owner's cousin burned a bridge of trust between them when he invited 5 strangers aboard his relative's vessel, forcing the boat's captain to choose between family privileges and personal liability.

Being a family member or a friend of someone who has a boat is the best. 

From a boat-adjacent position, you occasionally get to enjoy the boat without all of the nagging responsibility of boat ownership. There are no payments, no slips, no insurance payments, and you still get to feel the salty breeze in your hair, taste the briny spray of the sea, and live it up like a yacht-man on your free days. Part-time boat enjoyment is the best kind of boat enjoyment. 

A guy's cousin owned a sailboat down at the marina, and although this man couldn't sail, he was allowed to visit from time to time, until he overstepped. The boat owner once trusted him with his things, but when he caught him partying with strangers on his vessel, he was more than peeved; he was betrayed. Why would you ever risk such a perfect situation? When your cousin is gracious enough to let you onto his boat, why would you put him in a bad position? A smart man would never throw his cousin's hospitality in his face, but this cousin was emboldened by clout-chasing energy and felt entitled to his cousin's stuff. 

Little did he know, this secret boat party would cost him access to the boat forever.

    Knowing full-well that this boat was not his, the boat owner's cousin swindled the marina into letting him aboard with the boat in the slip, and instead of stopping the intruder, they trusted him. It seems that this story reveals that even family members can take advantage of trust. And in that situation, all that you can do is draw a hard line in the sand, set boundaries, and protect yourself and your property.

  • I asked him how he got access to the slip. he said he told the dock attendant on duty that I said it was okay and he was family.

If he wants a boat so badly, HE can scrimp and save for one of his own and pay for ongoing slip rent and maintenance. Obviously however, he has boat envy and wants to use yours for free. Your instincts were right about how he would act, and he is now the absolute last person I would let anywhere near the boat. I'm glad you spoke with the marina. If something had happened, they could have tried to hold you accountable.
